COURSE DETAILS

The course begins by teaching how memory works and how we learn to speak our native language. Although children have a number of advantages when it comes to learning to speak, it is possible for anyone to learn to speak a second language if they approach the task in the correct way. You do not have to have a natural "gift" for language learning.

Experts agree that the biggest barrier to learning a second language comes from the difficulty in remembering vocabulary. Once basic grammatical structures have been understood, the more vocabulary you know the better you will be able to speak the language. A number of methods for learning and practising vocabulary will be outlined during this part of the course which can be applied to learning any language.

The second part of the course teaches memory techniques that can be used to memorise vocabulary and grammatical rules. These are techniques that make difficult information easier to remember and are similar to the ones used by competitors in the World Memory Championships to enable them to perform such feats as memorising the order of a shuffled pack of cards in 34 seconds and memorising 182 random words in 15 minutes.

We begin by looking at how to learn English vocabulary and then how to apply that technique to memorising vocabulary and grammar from any foreign language. The next part of the course looks at methods of retaining the vocabulary that has been learnt and at different ways of practising reading and speaking a language. It also provides details of the many resources available for the language learner apart from the traditional courses and books.

There is ample time at the end of the course for attendees to ask how to apply the techniques to any specific language or grammatical rule that might not have already been covered.

At the end of the course the attendees are given a dedicated email address at which they can contact Charles Garavan if they have any follow up queries or if they would like any part of the course refreshed or any point clarified.
